Prinášame vám niekoľko postrehov od svetovo úspešného autora sci-fi Geoffreyho A. Landisa k poviedkam, ktoré boli zaslané do anglickej súťaže Fantázia Award 2020.
Dragon tongue
Na tejto poviedke oceňujem jazyk aj rozprávačský talent autora – neprestal ma zas a znovu prekvapovať, a to aj napriek tomu, že sa v ňom využívajú klišé postupy rozprávky. Rozuzlenie zápletky som naozaj nečakal, no presne taký koniec poviedku vhodne zavŕšil. Dobrý výkon.
Hearts of Fury
Zaujímavý, nápaditý a dobre vyrozprávaný príbeh, autor má navyše výnimočný cit pre využitie jazyka mýtov. Veľmi sa mi páči, že hoci je hlavný hrdina na začiatku vykreslený v pozitívnom svetle, napokon má od kladnej postavy dosť ďaleko. Nie som expert na Japonsko, takže zasadenie príbehu do týchto kulís neviem adekvátne posúdiť, no mám isté skúsenosti s mečmi. Preto si dovolím poznamenať, že veľký meč, čo nosí Yumi, je podľa mňa skôr ōdachi než katana.

Zábavná poviedka o cestovaní v čase.
The Card
Klasický príbeh, krátky, no výstižný.
Friday Night
Na tejto poviedke by som vypichol zmysel pre absurdno.
Of Shells and Hunters
Naozaj pôsobivý príbeh o hrôzach, ktoré na nás číhajú v našom, skutočnom svete.
Fortune
Poviedka má svoje pozitíva, no priveľa vecí sa v nej deje v rozpore s logikou príbehu – akoby sa autor skrátka len rozhodol, že to tak bude. Napríklad, prečo by sa mal chlapec potrebu skrývať, keď nevedel, kam nacisti odviedli Židov z dediny?
Vampire Wanted
Z tejto poviedky mám veľmi zmiešané pocity. Zápletka nie je ničím výnimočná, no odohráva sa v nezvyčajnom, komplexne vykreslenom svete, v ktorom sa prelínajú prvky sci-fi, klasického hororu a reality. Od tohto autora by som si rád ešte niečo prečítal už len pre to, ako dokáže vystavať svoje fiktívne univerzum.

Dragon tongue
I liked this story both for the language, for the storytelling skill, and for the fact that the story continued to surprise me: over and over, although the story used the clichés of fairy tale, the plot went in a direction that I did not expect, but yet was completely justified within the story. Well done.
Hearts of Fury
An interesting story, well told, with good invention and an excellent sense of mythic language. I very much liked the fact that the protagonist was shown in a sympathetic fashon, but revealed to be less than admirable. I am not an expert on Japan, and so can’t comment on the background, but I do have some expertise in swords, so I will make a single comment, that the large sword carried by Yumi seems more like an ōdachi than a katana.

I liked this one for the sense of the absurd.
Of Shells and Hunters
Very powerful; this is a tale of the horrors in the real world.
Fortune
There was much to like about this story, but there were too many places in the story in which events happened not because of a reasonable story logic, but merely because the author decreed them to happen. For example, it seems unlikely that the boy could both not be aware of where the Nazis had taken the Jews of the village, but yet still understand he needs to hide.
Vampire Wanted
This was story on which I had very mixed feelings. The plot of the story was ordinary, but the background and the setting were complex and interesting, combining elements of science fiction, classic horror, and the real world. I would like to read more of this writer simply for the worldbuilding.
